So How Big is Australia?
The Prof has an interesting post comparing the size of Australia to America. This picture should give everyone a pretty good idea of just how big Australia is compared to the US:
As you can see Australia is about the same size as the continental United States. This picture really gives people in the US an idea of how far overland I traveled during my Northern Territory journey from Melbourne to Darwin and back. As you can see, it’s a long damn way.
The Prof also has an interesting graphic that compares the GDP of US states to countries around the world. It may be hard to believe but Australia’s GDP is equal to the state of Ohio.
Another interesting fact worth bringing up is that Australia is roughly the same size as the continental US but only has 20 million people compared to 300 million in the US. Plus 80% of that 20 million is concentrated in the major Australian cities listed on the above picture. That should give everyone an idea about the amount of open space in Australia.
